Put a rope on a boat, it becomes a line; put a flag on a boat, it becomes an ensign.  An ensign is flown on a ship's stern to indicate the vessel's nationality.  To be specific, there are three types of ensigns: 1. A civil ensign: flown by recreational vessels and merchant vessels in most countries 2. A government ensign, flown by coast guard ships 3. A naval ensign, flown on naval vessels. NOAA announced their new, free nautical chart app for Android yesterday.  The app includes US coastal charts as well as the Great Lakes, plus an up-to-date copy of the Coast Pilot.  This is a welcome addition to the supply of chart apps available across the various tablet platforms, though its important to not that this is Android-only.  For the iPad, I like Navionics charts. I've been using them for years, and find them particularly helpful for estimating distances for trips and deliveries.  Anytime I have to quote a job, I go...
